Siegwerk launches new functional coatings for sustainable paper packaging

Siegwerk to unveil new paper coatings at Specialty Papers Europe 2024, enhancing sustainability and performance.

Siegwerk has announced new functional coatings for paper packaging designed to enhance barrier and heat-seal properties. The new coatings, part of the company’s CIRKIT product line, aim to meet the growing demand for recyclable and sustainable paper packaging.

Oliver Waddington, Head of Business Development for Circular Economy Coatings at Siegwerk, highlighted the challenge of functionalizing fiber-based materials to ensure effective performance and recyclability. “More and more brand owners and manufacturers are turning to renewable and recyclable materials to sustainably pack their products,” Waddington said. “This comes with the challenge of functionalizing fiber-based materials like paper to meet barrier and process requirements while ensuring smooth disposal in the recycling process.”

The new product lineup includes CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1420 and CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1422, which offer barrier functionality against liquids and water vapor, combined with excellent heat-seal capabilities. CIRKIT BAR CT 2513 provides a strong barrier against grease and oil, while CIRKIT NATUBAR CT 4326, based on natural materials, meets the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) and offers effective barrier protection.

Waddington emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing packaging sustainability. “Packaging sustainability is a complex topic, making cross-industry collaboration essential for progress,” he said. Siegwerk’s new coatings reflect its commitment to supporting the design of circular packaging solutions and meeting regulatory requirements.
