DS Smith and Versuni collaborate on sustainable packaging for Philips Baristina coffee machine

New sustainable packaging for the Philips Baristina coffee machine, designed by DS Smith and Versuni, features recyclable materials and anti-scratch coating for enhanced presentation.

DS Smith has announced a partnership with Versuni to develop a new, eco-friendly packaging solution for the Philips Baristina coffee machine. This fibre-based packaging is fully recyclable and eliminates the use of plastic bags, marking a significant shift towards sustainable materials.

The packaging features corrugated buffers with an anti-scratch coating, designed to minimize external damage and enhance the product’s presentation. The design aims to provide an engaging unboxing experience, showcasing the coffee machine centrally and featuring bold visuals and artwork to attract both in-store and online consumers.

Thoran Ottens, Divisional Key Account Manager, Electronics at DS Smith, stated, “Consumer trends and expectations are fast moving and in keeping with desires for sustainable packaging. We designed this product solution with an objective to create a high-end visual impact for the shelf and online.”

DS Smith utilized its Circular Design Metrics (CDM) tool to evaluate the packaging’s performance. This tool assesses various factors, including recyclability, renewable content, and supply chain efficiency, to gauge the overall sustainability of the design.

DS Smith’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in their company-wide Now and Next strategy, which focuses on redefining packaging to meet evolving environmental and consumer demands.
