Insights into corrugated packaging trends in MENA

Luke Banks, Managing Director of JL Group LLC, outlines the MENA region’s corrugated packaging industry

Corrugated packaging demand in the GCC and MENA region is on a steady rise, projecting a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 4-6% through 2030. This growth is buoyed by a favourable business climate and robust industrial expansion in key economies like KSA and the UAE. Despite these opportunities, manufacturers face intensifying competition and overcapacity pressures, necessitating innovation and differentiation strategies.

A significant growth driver within the corrugated packaging landscape is the e-commerce sector. Traditionally distinct, e-commerce now intersects with major consumer segments such as processed foods, fresh produce, beverages, and electronics. This convergence is particularly pronounced in MENA, where e-commerce is catalyzing industry growth and reshaping retail paradigms.

Trends and Challenges:
Corrugated manufacturers must swiftly adapt to evolving packaging requirements while managing costs. This entails investments in advanced machinery, technical expertise, and innovative design capabilities. Drawing lessons from European markets, leading companies are shifting towards solutions-based approaches, focusing on bespoke packaging solutions tailored for the e-commerce boom.

E-Commerce in the UAE:
The UAE stands at the forefront of e-commerce growth in MENA, with substantial transactions driven by mobile platforms. In 2021 alone, mobile e-commerce transactions amounted to $2.9 billion, comprising 58% of total e-commerce revenue. Projections indicate a robust growth trajectory, with e-commerce revenue expected to reach $8 billion by 2025. Despite these gains, challenges persist, including fragmented market dynamics and varying packaging demands.

Evolution Amidst Growth:
As industrial activities expand across the Middle East, packaging remains integral to economic sustainability. Manufacturers must optimize every stage of the packaging lifecycle, from sourcing raw materials to disposal, to enhance value creation. This imperative is amplified in the e-commerce era, where understanding packaging’s role in supply chains is crucial for gaining a competitive edge and fostering industry growth.

The MENA region’s corrugated packaging sector stands at a pivotal juncture, propelled by the transformative force of e-commerce. As consumer behaviours shift and digital commerce expands its footprint across sectors, corrugated manufacturers are poised to innovate and adapt. Luke Banks emphasises the need for continuous evolution. “As e-commerce reshapes retail dynamics, corrugated manufacturers must innovate to meet evolving packaging demands and maintain competitiveness.” These imperatives underscore a future where strategic investments in technology, sustainability, and tailored solutions will drive sustained growth, ensuring the industry remains at the forefront of economic vitality in the region.
