DS Smith and Carlsberg partner to reduce CO2 with innovative round wrap packaging solution

DS Smith has partnered with Carlsberg in Poland to introduce Round Wrap corners, aiming to reduce the use of shrink film on pallets. This multi-pack packaging solution is designed to reduce CO2 emissions compared to standard corrugated multi-packs. The recyclable packaging is expected to save up to 224 tons of CO2 annually for Carlsberg in Poland. Its fibre-based design with rounded corners helps protect products during transportation.

The rounded shape offers branding benefits for Carlsberg Poland, with increased opportunities for placing brand identity and illustrations on the rounded corners and the 360-degree side surface of the packs. A survey by DS Smith and Toluna highlighted that consumers prefer the DS Smith Round Wrap as an “enhanced wrap-around design” with “stand-out on the shelf” appeal.

The DS Smith design team used the company’s Circular Design Metrics (CDM) tools to measure the impact of the new packaging solution for Carlsberg Poland. The process involves eight key indicators, including carbon footprint, design for reuse, supply chain optimization, and materials utilization. These indicators reveal the performance of a packaging design and allow DS Smith teams to measure its sustainability performance accurately.

Reinier Schlatmann, Regional Managing Director of the Packaging Division in East Europe at DS Smith, stated, “We are proud to partner with Carlsberg Poland for a trial launch of the DS Smith Round Wrap. This sustainable packaging innovation was developed using our Circular Design Metrics, offering durability, supply chain advantages, and branding opportunities. This aligns with our company-wide commitment to redefining packaging for a changing world and our Now & Next Sustainability strategy as we help our customers design out waste and move towards a circular economy.”
