Mondi and Cemex introduce sustainable cement packaging solution in the Balearic Islands

Mondi and Cemex launch SolmixBag, a sustainable cement packaging solution, in the Balearic Islands

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has introduced its innovative SolmixBag to the building industry in the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca, in collaboration with Cemex, a global building materials company.

The SolmixBag, a one-ply paper bag made from 100% kraft paper, is designed to store and transport dry cement, screed, and coarse pre-mixes. It disintegrates during the mixing process, eliminating dust and waste on the building site. The bag is strong and durable, resistant to punctures, and dissolves when it comes into contact with water in the cement mixer, integrating with the cement.

Cemex and Mondi established a partnership over the past 12 years, with the recent collaboration on SolmixBag starting in 2021. Cemex sought a sustainable cement bag to meet legal requirements on the Spanish islands regarding waste landfilling and incineration, as well as to achieve its own sustainability goals. The introduction of SolmixBag helps achieve zero waste, complying with extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging.

Fabio Barbieri, Sales Director Paper Bags at Mondi, expressed excitement about SolmixBag’s journey, stating that it delivers an easy and convenient solution for use on construction sites, aligning with Mondi’s MAP2030 goals to reduce waste effectively.

Nadal Mateu Piña, Commercial Manager for the Balearic Islands at Cemex, praised Mondi for providing the perfect product to meet their needs. Cemex is now packaging its most sustainable cement, CEM IV/B –(P) 32,5 SR- ECO+SR, in Mondi’s SolmixBag. Piña highlighted that this move not only complies with strict legal requirements on the Balearic Islands but also aligns with Cemex’s sustainability roadmap ‘Future in Action,’ aiming to roll out best practices in different regions and countries.
