Coca-Cola Consolidated has joined forces with Atlantic Packaging to create a closed-loop recycling system for stretch film, converting used film into post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on virgin materials by reclaiming and repurposing high-quality stretch film used in Coca-Cola Consolidated’s supply chain.
Stretch film is crucial for securing pallets during business-to-business logistics, ensuring products reach their destinations safely. Atlantic Packaging’s MUST Stretch Film Management Program optimizes the application of stretch film to maximize load containment while minimizing material usage. This efficient use of film leads to less waste and reduced environmental impact.
Post-consumer recycled content (PCR) refers to materials collected from consumers, recycled, and repurposed into new products. Atlantic’s Stretch Film Recycling Program processes used stretch film into PCR resin pellets, which can be used to manufacture new stretch film. Using PCR materials supports a circular economy by decreasing the need for virgin materials, lowering energy consumption, and reducing emissions and landfill waste.
Legislation on extended producer responsibility (EPR) is also promoting the use of PCR in plastics. EPR laws incentivize or mandate the inclusion of recycled content, driving improvements in recycling collection, education, and infrastructure. Atlantic, as North America’s largest privately held packaging company, is committed to helping clients transition smoothly to a circular economy.
The recycling process involves collecting and sorting used stretch film, which is then shredded, granulated, filtered, extruded, and deodorized to produce high-quality PCR resin pellets. These pellets are supplied to film manufacturing partners to create new rolls of stretch film containing recycled content.
Atlantic acknowledges the essential support of its partners in achieving success with the Stretch Film Recycling Program. The collaboration between upstream and downstream partners in the supply chain is vital for advancing sustainability efforts and fostering a circular economy.
