Coles has introduced a new recyclable paper bag for its Unique Selection mandarins, replacing the traditional plastic net bags as the fruit comes into season. This change aims to reduce plastic waste, eliminating the use of 11,700 kilograms of plastic annually. The paper bags can be recycled kerbside.
Coles anticipates selling over one million of these paper bags between April and October this year. Charlotte Gilbert, Coles General Manager of Fresh Produce, emphasized the retailer’s commitment to reducing waste and enhancing recycling convenience for customers. “We know how much our customers love mandarins at this time of year, so we’re pleased to offer them in a new paper bag that can be put in your recycling bin once you’ve enjoyed them,” she said.
Customers can still buy loose mandarins, including the Imperial and Afourer varieties. Coles expects to sell over 16 million tonnes of citrus fruit across its stores this season.
Rebecca Gilling, CEO of Planet Ark, praised Coles for its efforts to reduce plastic waste and offer a recyclable alternative. “It’s very positive to see Coles designing packaging to avoid plastic waste and provide Aussies with a recyclable alternative to a plastic net bag. While we support buying loose and reusing bags where possible, we commend Coles for its work to close the recycling loop,” she said.
The new 800g paper bags of mandarins are available in all states and territories except Western Australia, starting from $5.50.
