UAE launches packaging overhaul to fight obesity

The measure is among a flurry of proposals issued this week by the country’s cabinet, which is also looking to ensure all food packaging displays calorie counts.

UAE residents hold an impressive fifth place in the global ranking for soda consumption.

Each year, they gulp down an average of 103 litres of soft drinks – equal to 300 cans – according to a study with participation from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The global average consumptions stands at only 121 cans.

WAM, the UAE state news agency, reported that HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, said the cabinet is looking to develop initiatives endorsed by specialists, experts and the UAE’s people.
